assistanceBORONGAN CITY (Reden D. Tangara, PIA) – Some 112 coconut farmers received cash and food assistance from the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) under the Department of Agriculture’s Cash and Food Subsidy for Marginal Farmers and Fishers Program on December 21, at the  Borongan City plaza.

Of the subsidy, three thousand pesos will be given as cash assistance to be claimed at MLhuillier, while the remaining P2,000 will be for food items specifically rice (P1,000), chicken (P600), and egg (P400).

One beneficiary Rodrigo Anacta, 70, from Brgy. Surok, Borongan City was thankful as his movement is limited due to the pandemic. He said that with the amount, his family can celebrate Christmas like others.

hazard payTACLOBAN CITY (Gerico Sabalza, PNA) – The 24 municipal disaster risk reduction and management officers (MDRRMO) in Northern Samar on Friday appealed to the national government to grant hazard pay to disaster responders and volunteers battling the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In an open letter addressed to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Chairperson and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and NDRRMC executive director and Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) chief Undersecretary Ricardo Jalad, they cited that no law or other national issuances grant them hazard pay or other compensatory benefits despite its role as "cannon fodder" to all types of hazards.

acquiring vaccinesTACLOBAN CITY (Roel Amazona, PNA) – The provincial government of Leyte has allocated an initial amount of PHP20 million for the procurement of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines once it is available in the market, Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla said on Monday.

The budget can procure around 20,000 to 40,000 vaccines depending on the price of the manufacturer. The province is looking at Pfizer or AstraZeneca as supplier.

We already coordinated with Secretary Carlito Galvez, Jr. on our plan to purchase,” Petilla told reporters.

Galvez is the chief implementer of the National Action Plan vs. COVID-19 and the only official authorized by the national government to negotiate for the purchase of vaccines.

holiday revelriesTACLOBAN CITY (Gerico Sabalza, PNA) – Eastern Visayas has 45 authorized retailers and four dealers of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices this holiday season, the police regional office here has reported.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) through the Regional Civil Security Unit (RSCU) has approved the special permits of 10 retailers in Eastern Samar, nine each in Leyte and Samar, six in Biliran, five each in Northern Samar and Southern Leyte, and one in Tacloban City plus the four authorized dealers.

RSCU clerk chief executive, Master Sgt. Joessie Delantar, said the number of retailers and dealers that secured special permits for this holiday season is lower compared to last year's 56 and six, respectively.

doh r8TACLOBAN CITY (Gerico Sabalza, PNA) – Some 535,655 children in Eastern Visayas would be covered in the mass vaccination against measles-rubella and polio in the country, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Friday. 

The month-long supplemental immunization campaign which starts on Feb. 1, 2021 includes children between zero and nine-months and below five years old for measles-rubella and oral polio vaccines, respectively.

Elaine Villarosa, DOH Eastern Visayas national immunization program manager, said the region is part of the second phase of this nationwide campaign including the National Capital Region, Central Luzon, Mimaropa, Calabarzon, Cagayan Valley, Western Visayas, and Central Visayas. The first phase was conducted in the Mindanao regions and some areas in Luzon, she added.

hinundayan bnbMAASIN CITY (Erna S. Gorne, PIA) – The Department of Health (DOH) - Southern Leyte initially launched the Fourmula 1 + Botika ng Bayan in the municipality of Hinundayan, one of Southern Leyte towns in the Pacific area.

Hinundayan Municipal Mayor Elisa Dela Cruz in her Facebook post noted that Hinundayan Rural Health Unit is the first recipient of the Botika ng Bayan program under the F1 plus BNB program in the Pacific area.

In its efforts to provide quality and accessible healthcare services to the Filipinos, President Rodrigo Duterte released Presidential Directive No. 2016-0186 on the revival of the "Botika Ng Bayan (BNB) Program.
