BNS Maydolong

Maydolong, E.Samar - The National Nutrition Council (NNC) 8 on Monday kicked off the weeklong basic training course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) in Maydolong, Eastern Samar, after more than a year of strict border restrictions due to the threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

This training, which will run until April 16, aims to capacitate BNS with basic knowledge and skills, as well as core values and traits that are necessary for them to perform their roles and functions effectively.

The local government unit funded the activity, through the initiative of Teresita Bayotas-Garado, the Municipal Nutrition Action Officer and wife of Hon. Godofredo Garado, the Mayor and Chairperson Municipal Nutrition Committee of said town.

Meanwhile, the NNC regional office here, led by Dr. Catalino Dotollo Jr., Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, will provide technical assistance as its counterpart.

Serving as facilitators are Nino Archie Labordo, Nutrition Officer (NO) III; Ullasini Alferez, NOII; and Annabel Limbagan, NOI.

The activity is being held at the town gymnasium to ensure that physical distancing is strictly observed, while face masks and alcohol were provided to all participants from the town's 20 barangays.

The BNS Program is a human resource development strategy of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition, which involves the recruitment, training, deployment and supervision of volunteer workers called the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS).

Presidential Decree No. 1569 (1979) mandated the deployment of at least one (1) BNS in every barangay in the country to monitor the nutritional status of children and other nutritionally at-risk groups and link them with nutrition and nutrition-related service providers. PD 1569 also mandated the NNC to administer the program in cooperation with local government units.#NASLabordo and GSabalza
