PALO, Leyte - The National Nutrition Council (NNC) Eastern Visayas has recognized individuals and local government units in the region that conquered the challenges amid the global health crisis for the continuity of nutrition programs and services.
For the first time, the annual Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) was held in blended virtual and face-to-face on March 30, 2021 at The Oriental Hotel in Palo, Leyte as standard health protocols remain in place to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Special citation for nutrition advocate retirees were given to Alicia Nicart, Yvonne Abonales, Resurreccion Enage, Annabelle Parane and Alma Gadin.
The local government of Mahaplag town, Matalom, Mayorga, Abuyog, Bato, Dulag, Hindang, Javier, and MacArthur all in Leyte were recognized for its active participation in the 2020 Provincial Monitoring and Evaluation on Local Level Plan Implementation.
Outstanding LGUs with above 80 percent coverage in the 2020 Operation Timbang Plus (OPT+) are Tabango and Albuera both in Leyte; Giporlos and Taft in Eastern Samar; Allen, Bobon, San Jose and Victoria in Samar; Almeria, Biliran, Cabucgayan, Caibiran, Culaba, Kawayan and Naval in Biliran; Matuguinao, Paranas, Sta. Rita, Talalora and the cities of Calbayog and Catbalogan in Samar; the towns of Bontoc and Sogod in Southern Leyte; and the province of Biliran.
Also recognized were LGUs with low level of stunting prevalence rate from 2017-2020 based on the <20 cut off of the World Health Organization.
These include Anahawan, Bontoc, Hinunangan, Hinundayan, Liloan, Limasawa, Malitbog, Pintuyan, San Juan, San Ricardo, Silago, Sogod and the city of Maasin in Southern Leyte; Alangalang, Albuera, Barugo, Dulag, Tabango, Tabontabon, Tanauan, Tunga and Ormoc City in Leyte; and Caibiran, Culaba, Kawayan and Naval in Biliran.
In Northern Samar, these are the towns of Allen, Bobon, Catarman, San Antonia, San Isidro, San Jose, and Victoria; Dolores, Salcedo, Sulat and Taft in Eastern Samar; and Paranas, Talalora and Tarangan in Samar.
The NNC also cited the commendable mobilization advocacy of the provincial nutrition offices of Leyte, Samar, and Southern Leyte on integrating nutrition programs, projects and activities in the 2021 Annual Investment Program.
Meanwhile, hailed as Barangay Nutrition Scholar Covid-19 Heroes were Rosario Igmen and Cynie Sanoy both from Paranas town in Samar; Michelle Badidles and Sabrina Mari Cornejo from Tacloban City; and Rosita Acsibar from Maasin City in Southern Leyte for their invaluable contribution in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic as well as in the effective implementation of nutrition program.
Other nutrition scholars that were given recognition are Jennifer Abordo, Maritoni Tabunyag, Riza Garcia, Arlene Bustillo, and Shirley Ann Caratay from Tacloban; Ma. Melisa Pacana and Arlene Renomeron both in Ormoc; Wilma Contrata and Ceasar Legua Cenera from the towns of San Jose and Bobon in Northern Samar, respectively; Ma. Luz Daligon of San Jose de Buan and ginalyn Padol of Daram both in Samar; and Lucy Caalim in Maasin City.
Another citation was given to Massin City LGU for its sustained information education and communication on infant and young child feeding program, while the "Listong Agapay Project: Nutri-bread, immune booster juice and malungay/kalabasa noodles" of Tarangnan and the "Nutri-Van: Exchange for Ecobricks" were awarded as the Most Innovative Nutrition Project 2020.
All awardees were selected based on the criteria set by the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team. The ceremony was livestreamed on Facebook and attended by a selected number of individuals at the venue.#GSabalza
