World Psoriasis Day is observed every 29th of October annually. This year’s theme is “Mental Health” which aims to increase awareness of the challenges that people with psoriasis face in terms of their mental well-being and aims to improve access to treatment.
Psoriasis is a condition marked by skin rashes and is brought on by an overactive immune system. According to World Health Organization, psoriasis is an incurable, persistent, painful, disfiguring, and crippling noncommunicable disease (NCD) that can affect the skin, nails, and joints. It has a detrimental effect on the quality of life. Some people with the condition develop psoriatic arthritis, a chronic inflammatory arthritis that causes joint deformities and impairment.
People with psoriasis typically face stigma and are shunned in typical social settings. Psoriasis and mental health are connected in a number of ways. It affects the quality of life that sometimes can lead to depression and other emotional problems; hence this year’s theme is all about mental health.

This year’s theme for the World Mental Health Day is “Make mental health and well-being for all a global priority”. Every 10th day of October, mental health awareness is being celebrated to advocate and put double efforts for a call to action and stop the stigma.

24 October 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region X facilitated the joint meeting of the Nutrition Action Officers Association of the Philippines (NAOPA), Inc. Northern Mindanao Chapter, District City Nutrition Program Coordinators Association of the Philippines (DCNPCAP), Region X Inc. and the National Barangay Nutrition Scholars (NaBNS) Federation, Inc. Northern Mindanao Chapter. The meeting was held last 14 October 2022 at Chali Resort and Conference Center, Cagayan de Oro City.
The morning session was dedicated for the plenary updates, while the afternoon portion was for the breakout meeting per association.
In her opening message, Nutrition Program Coordinator Fernandez thanked the nutrition workers for their attendance to the event, and for their commitment and dedication to implement and coordinate nutrition programs at the local level. NPC Fernandez also gave initial updates on nutrition program developments.

25 October 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – Iligan City welcomed the Northern Mindanao Mentoring Initiative for Nutrition (NorMIN) Regional Shepherding Team (RST) last 21 October 2022 for the initial shepherding activity. Members of the City Nutrition Committee (CNC) and personnel from the City Nutrition Office were convened in the SP Session Hall, Iligan City. Vice Mayor Marianito “Manoy Dodong” Alemania graced the activity on behalf of Mayor Frederick W. Siao.
The RST introduced the Nutrition Shepherding Project to the local government unit, and further presented the initial Shepherding Plan formulated by the RST. Shepherding Plan for Iligan City includes hiring and upskilling manpower, enhancing the nutrition action plan, improving the implementation of nutrition programs, projects and activities, among others.
The Iligan CNC accepted the challenge and committed to further consider and strategize on the Shepherding Plan, and to organize the LGU Team who will facilitate the planned activities. Among the immediate activities of the CNC include quarterly meetings, Program Implementation Review, among others.
Members of the RST are Nutrition Program Coordinator Gladys Mae S. Fernandez, City Nutrition Action Officer Nenita F. Rabe and City Nutrition Program Coordinator Sherill Faith P. Española of Cagayan de Oro City, Ms. Gwennifyn Pauline Vaquilar, Local Government Operations Officer of the Department of the Interior and Local Government X, and Nutrition Officer Sheena Marie G. Talle.

21 October 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – In its joint meeting held last 5 October 2022 at Chali Resort and Conference Center, Cagayan de Oro City, the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) and its functionaries approved two (2) resolutions for the second semester. A total of 21 member agencies were present, with the meeting co-presided by Department of Health Regional Director Dr. Jose R. Llacuna, Jr., and Nutrition Program Coordinator Gladys Mae S. Fernandez of the National Nutrition Council X.
The following are the approved policies: RNC X Resolution No. 4, s.2022 entitled “Confirming the results and ranking of the Search for Regional Outstanding Local Nutrition Focal Points and LGU Awardees for Decreasing Trend on Stunting Prevalence for CY 2020-2022”, and RNC X Resolution No. 5, s.2022 entitled “Endorsing the Request of NAOPA, Inc. Northern Mindanao Chapter regarding the creation of permanent plantilla items for Nutrition Action Officers in LGUs”.
Moreover, the RNC X, together with its sub-structures, RNC-Technical Working Group (RTWG), Regional Nutrition Cluster, and the Early Childhood Care and Development First 1000 Days (ECCD-F1K) RTWG discussed further on relevant updates. Among the updates discussed were the following: Philippine Multisectoral Nutrition Project (PMNP), Regional Plan of Action for Nutrition (RPAN) 2023-2028 Formulation Workshop, Results and Ranking of Search for Outstanding Local Nutrition Focal Points, Updates on the inclusion of Republic Act 11148 in 2023 Operational Plans of RLAs, Training on Nutrition in Emergencies and Information Management and Tutok Kainan Dietary Supplementation Program Updates.
Dir. Llacuna emphasized that by working together, the group can achieve more. 24 October 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – The Nutrition Action Officers Association of the Philippines (NAOPA), Inc. Northern Mindanao Chapter held its business meeting for the second semester CY2022. The meeting was convened on 14 October 2022 at Chali Resort and Conference Center, Cagayan de Oro City.
Mr. Elmer S. Risonar, City Nutrition Action Officer of Gingoog City and the outgoing President of the association, presided over the meeting.
Among the meeting highlights is the election of the new set of officers for CY 2022-2025, of which Ms. Hazel P. Dondonayos, CNAO of Valencia City was elected as the new President of the NAOPA, Inc.
