3 March 2023, Cagayan de Oro City – All Barangay Nutrition Scholars and Day Care Workers of Catarman, Camiguin underwent the Training on Basic Course for BNSs held 21 February 2023. Nutrition Officer Sheena Marie G. Talle of National Nutrition Council (NNC) facilitated the training, focusing on the responsibilities of BNSs, Barangay Nutrition Committees, as well as on nutrition assessment and preparation of Barangay Nutrition Action Plan.
Gracing the training was Councilor Cathy Lopez-Galus, Chairperson on the Committee on Health and Nutrition, on behalf of Mayor Kit Palarca. In her message, she shared her close involvement with the nutrition program, and that the executive and legislative bodies of the local government unit (LGU) of Catarman are exploring means to increase the honorarium of BNSs.
On the other hand, Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer Emelyn Salutan and Municipal Nutrition Action Officer Eleonor Butaya shared the rationale of conducting the training. They emphasized the need for harmonizing the reports and coordination measures between BNSs and DCWs, considering that DCWs get the nutrition status report from BNSs.
During the training, BNSs and DCWs were made to demonstrate how to properly measure a child’s weight and length/height, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC).
