RO9 LakewoodRealizing the importance of maternal nutrition as part of the First 1000 Days (F1KD) of life, the municipality of Lakewood conducted a month-long supplemental feeding to the 135 pregnant mothers of their 14 barangays during this month of December. This initiative of Lakewood aims to guarantee that pregnant women, especially those who are nutritionally at-risk, will receive adequate nutrition to ensure safe and healthy delivery of the baby and to prevent early onset of malnutrition and its consequences.

Headed by Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) Chairperson, Hon. Mayor Domingo V. Mirrar with Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) Stefano Menjid, Municipal Health Officer (MHO) Dr. Doreen Bosleng and together with the Rural Health Unit staff, the Local Government Unit (LGU) conducted a supplemental feeding activity to pregnant women starting last December 7, 2020 with nutrient-dense food composed of rice, eggs, chicken, monggo and milk. For easier distribution and access to the target beneficiaries, the distribution was made per barangay while following the COVID-19 health protocols to secure the safety of the pregnant mothers against corona virus.

The activity is now on its 3rd week from the time of its commencement and mothers were weighed weekly to monitor changes on their nutritional status.  Since the start of the program, the LGU noted a promising outcome and good improvement on their weights leading towards the achievement of the goals and objectives of the program.

Guided by the fact that ensuring good nutrition during pregnancy is a vital component to prevent pregnancy complications and to ensure that the baby will receive the nutrients it needs even inside the mother’s womb, this initiative of the municipality of Lakewood is one of the key actions worth replicating by other LGUs to lessen or totally eradicate malnutrition in their respective communities. This program is also consistent with the scientifically-supported fact that the F1KD of life, starting from conception to the second birthday of the child, is the “Golden Window of Opportunity” that guarantees better future of the next generation. The National Nutrition Council IX commends the efforts of LGU-Lakewood in prioritizing the nutritional well-being of its constituents especially the pregnant mothers. May this laudable nutrition and health program initiatives continue and influence other LGUs to do the same!
