October 28, 2020. Cotabato City. The Provincial Government of Lanao Del Sur Chief Mamintal Bombit Adiong acknowledges the gargantuan task to address the nutritional problems faced by the constituents since his assumption as the Governor. The data dissemination of Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology in the recently concluded Expanded National Nutrition Survey (ENNS) revealed the marked improvement of Lanao del Sur from Stunting rate of 5 out 10 (49%) below 5 year old children to 3 (33.3%) in just 4 years.

Undernutrition, Wasting, and Obesity data is even better or at par with the National Data as reported. “This is one of the most significant reduction on malnutrition record in the entire region of Bangsamoro Region in the recent years.” The report was lauded by Chief Minister Ahod Balawag Ebrahim acting as the Regional Nutrition Czar. With the support and concerted effort of the BARMM Regional Nutrition Committee, Local Government Units, Civil Society Organizations, International Non-Government Organizations, Non-Government Organizations and National Nutrition Council, it strengthened the drive to attain the objectives. “I am very happy that our efforts had paid off. The dedication of health personnel towards nutritional challenges is consistent with the national goals and objectives”, said Dr. Alinader Minalang, the Provincial Health Chief of the province.

As former ARMM Health Secretary Sinolinding Jr. mentioned in 1996, “The road to nutrition and health is certain with our commitment and cooperation.” Indeed.

Cotabato City. Thirteen (13) Barangay Nutrition Scholar recruits successfully completed the training in the picturesque coastal town of Datu Blah Sinsuat in Maguindanao. This is the response of the local government to the alarming cases of malnutrition brought by poverty, inadequate health and nutrition education, and poor access to potable water and environmental sanitation. Mayor Marshal I. Sinsuat expects significant change in the picture of nutrition in his town by designating Vice-Mayor Raida Tomawis-Sinsuat as the Municipal Nutrition Action officer.

Lidasan, Nutritionist-Dietitian Deployment Program Ms. Jacqueline E. Gurtiza, RND, Mr. Michael V. Enerlan, RND and Ms. Chris Ann G. Pangol, RND. BNS GO BARMM

Cotabato City. Barangay Nutrition Scholar Trainings went on full throttle amidst COVID-19  scare among residents of Maguindanao. Without compromising the safety of participants, minimal health protocols are strictly observed among the recruits and facilitators. With the very hectic schedules, Datu Anggal Midtimbang Municipality got the first slot on August 23-27, followed by Sultan Mastura Municipality on September 7-11, and a week after on September 15-18 in Ampatuan Municipality, and finally on September 21-25 in Parang Municipality.

How does the NNC-BARMM managed to accomplish such workload considering the 7 man team loaded with other responsibilities aside from the trainings and the conduct of orientations? It is the multitasking, peer support and distribution of workload among our staff, the Provincial Nutrition Action Officer, and the NDDPs of the province that made this possible. Saying in jest "in Nutrition, we love to work under pressure!: laments Maam Hannah and Dr. Maleja. With the full support of the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Dr. Sinolinding Jr., NNC-BARMM with the Provincial Nutrition Committee aims to address the manpower problem by recruiting and capacitating more BNS in many areas of BARMM.

Datu Salibo, Maguindanao. With National Nutrition Council-BARMM conducting the Training on Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars for Datu Salibo, the 6th Class Municipality embraced the concept of empowering the community against malnutrition. Popular for its unending security unrest involving various armed groups that constantly displaces its population, this resulted to social service deprivation, health deterioration including malnutrition, education issues, and economic slump that caused widespread poverty among the residents.

During the training, it was known that most of the recruits served as Barangay Health Workers with meager allowance. Asserting what is best for the BNS recruits presented by the Nutrition Officer III Hannah Farinah M. Lidasan before Mayor Solaiman Sandigan, PhD, with the concurrence of Executive Secretary Unson Dumagui, all recruits are now be part of the Job Order Human Resource with a 3,000 pesos monthly stipend. July 1, 2020. The Bangsamoro Nutrition Committee launch’s the 46th Nutrition Month celebration through live simulcast over the five (5) RMN radio stations in Cotabato City over DXMY AM, Koronadal City over DXXR AM, Iligan City over DXIC AM, Zamboanga City over DXRZ AM and Pagadian City over DXDR AM to reach the 5 provinces and 2 cities of Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

BARMM Interim Chief Minister Ahod Balawag Ebrahim lead the celebration through wearing the 2020 Nutrition Month T-shirt and hanging of streamers. And below his message as the Chairperson of BARMM Nutrition Committee:

“’Assalamu Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu! (All Peace be with you all!)

Wasallamu Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakutuhu!”

This year’s Nutrition Month celebration strictly adheres to the IATF protocols that include wearing of face mask, physical distancing of at least 1 meter, habitual hand washing with clean soap and water, or use of disinfectants, maintaining healthy lifestyle and eating nutritious food. Dr. Kadil M. Sinolinding Jr., National Nutrition Council BARMM Nutrition Program Coordinator was able to gather the support of the entire Bangsamoro region and their respective LGU heads. He said, “our problem on nutrition cannot be undone by one person but by the collective effort of everyone. This is our problem, and we can all be the solution”.

October 16, 2020. Cotabato City. The National Nutrition Council of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao started the airing “The 10 Kumainments” Nutrition School on-the-Air (NSOA) Module on September 4, 2020 over RMN DXMY 729 Cotabato City, every Tuesday and Friday from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The radio broadcast covers a wide area of central and western Mindanao region. With these, nutrition lectures are disseminated for the benefit of listeners from different tribes and dialects over the airwaves. Health and Nutrition are thoroughly discussed promoting the importance of prevention in the context of primary Health Care and Basic Nutrition of the Bangsamoro people amidst the COVID-19 pandemic

The host of the first episode is the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, Dr. Kadil M. Sinolinding Jr., DPBO., popularly known as “Doc Jojo” to his listeners. A respected lecturer, he encouraged the students on air to actively participate while teaching on the importance of basic nutrition and its implication to our health. RNPC Sinolinding Jr. stressed that the current situation where mobility is limited, this method of learning offers an advantage and opportunity to many people in general --- learning in the comfort of their own homes. Consisting of 12 modules, the lecture content was further simplified using our local dialects and consistent with the Nutritional Guidelines for Muslim Filipinos.

Like a regular classroom session, quizzes are given, recorded, and assessed per episode to evaluate the learning progress of our NSOA students. After completing all sessions, a simple virtual graduation rite follows. Exemplary students shall be given recognition as the “Kumainment Honor” Students.

Fondly saying with gusto while we share and learn, “Padayon lang NNC-BARMM”!
