As part of the celebration for the National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, the League of Nutrition Action Officers of Region 1 in partnership with the National Nutrition Council Region 1 invited Ms. Jovita Leny Calaguas, Nutritionist-Dietitian IV of DOH-CHD 1 last August 27, 2021, for the 7th Episode of Let’s Talk NAO.
During this episode, Ms. Calaguas discussed the theme of this year’s celebration “Tulong-tulong sa pagpapasuso sa First 1,000 Days” wherein it encourages breastfeeding to improve the health of babies and even the mothers. It is also based on the RA 11148 otherwise known as the Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng magNanay Act.
She emphasized that exclusive breastfeeding and continuous breastfeeding up to 2 years old can give enough nutrients and protection needed by baby, beneficial to the mother’s health as well and it economical. She added that the father can be a great help to a breastfeeding mother by providing his support to prevent postpartum depression and can also assist in giving breastmilk to babies thru cup feeding.
Furthermore, Ms. Calaguas stressed that during this time of pandemic, breastfeeding plays an important role in providing antibodies to the baby that can help fight against bacteria and viruses. A mother who is confirmed positive of COVID-19 can still continue to breastfeed her baby with strict compliance to minimum health standards like wearing of facemask, frequent hand washing and disinfection. Another option is to use cup feeding method.
Also, she said that a mother who is pregnant within second trimester or lactating can get her COVID-19 vaccine.
Lastly, she encouraged all the mothers to continue breastfeeding because breastmilk is still the best for babies and cannot be beaten by other formula milk and summarize it with TSEK-Tama, Sapat at Eksklusibo.
This episode is successfully hosted by Mr. John Philip Gabriel, Business Manager and Ms. Reygee Rocero, Acting President of League of Nutrition Action Officers./CPF
