NNC, UNICEF, UPLB partner to improve OPT Plus data quality

NNC in partnership with UNICEF Philippines with support from Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and technical experts from the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (IHNF-UPLB) through the UPLB Foundation Inc. will be developing a data quality audit protocol and update the implementing guidelines of the Operation Timbang (OPT) Plus. The project aims to improve the data quality, data collection process, and data utilization of the OPT Plus.

NNC continues monitoring and evaluation of LGU's nutrition programs

Annually, the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation or MELLPI is conducted by an interagency nutrition evaluation team from the national to provincial/ city/municipal levels to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of local nutrition program management and implementation.
This year, the NNC Secretariat conducts a new scheme – a virtual MELLPI in lieu of the usual face-to-face evaluation due to the ongoing COVID19 pandemic. At the regional level, the interagency regional evaluation teams (RET) coordinated and led by NNC regional office will do a combination of virtual and face-to-face evaluation schemes following the advisory of IATF on small group meetings and the local government unit protocol. The RET will visit all provinces and highly urbanized and independent cities (HUC and IC) in the region.

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) held the 2021 1st Quarter awarding ceremony for the Q-Webby Awards on the second Management Conference on 24 June 2021 which also forms part of the NNC’s 47th Anniversary celebration. Q-Webby Awards is the periodic counterpart of the NNC’s Annual Webby Awards.
The Q-Webby Award is an established system for the quarterly recognition of outstanding web pages and social media accounts of NNC regional units through the conferment of awards. The recognition sets a standard of excellence in the content and overall management of the NNC Website and official social media accounts.

Stunting has been a global burden and the Philippines ranked 9th in this crisis and ranked 2nd for the shortest in the ASEAN Region based on the 2014 Comparative Heights in ASEAN Countries. The First 1000 days intervention, dubbed Early Childcare and Development programs, has been the scientifically proven program to address this problem. Various national government agencies, NGOs, and other groups have been taking part in this endeavor over the years. One substantial step is the ratification of RA 11148 also known as The Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag Nanay Act in 2018. Some of the provisions stipulated in this law are to provide mothers the standard pre-and post-natal care, reduce low birth weight children, promote breastfeeding, and enjoin local government units to adopt and allocate budget for this cause.
Among other provisions of this law, the national dietary supplementation program which is an intervention providing additional calories to pregnant women in the 3rd trimester was identified and has proven to decrease low birth weight and thereby stunting among children. 1) Originally, Camarines Sur is the only province in Bicol to be provided with Tutok Kainan: Dietary Supplementation Program for 6,350 pregnant women. This is a 90-day well-monitored feeding and nutrition education program for pregnant women who are nutritionally at risk in their 1st and 2nd trimester and all pregnant women in their 3rd trimester
