11 June 2013 - As a kick off for the nutrition month celebration in July, the Regional Development Council (RDC) of Calabarzon through its Sectoral Committee on Social Development (SCSD) and the Regional Sub-Committee on Nutrition (RSCN) has organized a dissemination forum on the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF) at the Hotel Dominique, Tagaytay City.

The forum which was led by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) IV-A likewise tackled the Regional Nutrition Situation of Calabarzon and the Pilipinas Go 4 Health of the Department of Health. The participants in the NGF forum were HR officers or administrative officers of member agencies of the RDC and the academe.

During the 1st Quarter Meeting of the SCSD in February 6, 2013 where RNPC Carina Santiago presented the RSCN Strategic Plan 2012-2016, the SCSD members particularly the academe, reiterated the need for more information dissemination forum on nutrition, particularly on ways to address the problem of overnutrition.  And thus the idea of involving the HR and administrative personnel of government offices was made possible by NEDA IV-A to enable them to identify steps in mainstreaming the NGF as well as the Pilipinas Go 4 Health, and the Nutrition Month talking points into their staff development activities.  According to RNPC Carina Santiago of NNC IV-A – “all government employees and members of the academe should put into practice the NGF and serve as examples to the community”.

This year’s Nutrition Month is themed;Gutom at malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan!” raises the awareness on the need for more action in addressing hunger as part of the Philippine’s commitment to the United Nations Millennium Development Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.  The objectives of this year’s celebration are to: a) increase awareness on hunger issues and actions to mitigate hunger and malnutrition; b) encourage stakeholders to contribute in addressing hunger issues; and c) advocate for stronger political action to end hunger.

Also part of the nutrition month celebration kick off was the meeting of the SCSD wherein the conduct of Nutrition Caravan in selected nutritionally depressed areas of the region specifically Antipolo City was discussed. Also, a resolution supporting the passage of Magna Carta for Barangay Nutrition Scholars as requested by the RDC of Eastern Visayas was endorsed by the Committee for adoption of the RDC. Previously, the RDC has passed resolutions adopting the: Regional Sub-Committee on Nutrition Strategic Plan 2011-2016; Promotion of Breastfeeding and Provision of Lactation Rooms in All Agencies and the Conduct of the RDC-SCSD-RSCN Nutrition Caravan.
