ro4b 2017 rncs ppan 2017 2022 adoptionApril 7, 2017 – The Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) of MiMaRoPa echoed the call for urgent action to address the malnutrition problems in the region through the approval of RNC Resolution No. 1, Series 2017, a resolution for the adoption of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022.

According to the results of the 2015 National Nutrition Survey Updating of Nutritional Status of Filipino Children and Other Population Groups conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST), MiMaRoPa ranked 1st among all the regions with the highest prevalence of underweight children in the country at 31.8%.  In addition, underweight prevalence increased from 27.6% in 2013 to 31.8% in 2015, while stunting prevalence increased from 35.8% in 2013 to 40.9% in 2015.  On the other hand, wasting prevalence is consistent at 9.7% in 2013 and 2015.

Representatives of PROMO Nutri Com shared some of the best strategies and good practices, projects and initiatives of the group in the recent Planning Workshop and Team Building of RONDA-I at Skylight Hotel, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan held March 23, 2017.

RONDA-I (Regional Organization of Nutrition Development Advocates, Inc.) and PROMO Nutri Com (Palawan Romblon Oriental Mindoro Marinduque Occidental Mindoro Nutrition Communicators) are the local media groups of Region 1 and MiMaRoPa Region, respectively. This activity is in line with the continuous aim to improve the services being offered by the local media groups in their respective regions and advocacy activities for the betterment of the nutrition situation in region. Through this activity, RONDA-I aims to plan their local media activities for 2017-2018 and to observe and learn new strategies, approaches and good practices PROMO Nutri Com as basis in strengthening and intensifying the nutrition promotion and advocacy in Region I.

ro4b 2017 radyo kaunlaran logoMillions of Filipinos are affected by malnutrition especially the vulnerable population which includes preschool children, pregnant and lactating women. The continuous problem of undernutrition is further worsened by the low but increasing rates of overnutrition in the country. As part of the actions undertaken by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) in partnership with the Local Government Units (LGU) and other partner organizations, Nutriskwela Community Radio Stations were established in areas with high malnutrition prevalence to empower the community through the dissemination of correct, current and relevant information on nutrition and health as well as educational and developmental information from all relevant sectors of the community, government agencies, and non-government organizations.

In the continuous search for ways to alleviate the malnutrition problem in the region, the regional offices of Department of Health (DOH) and National Nutrition Council (NNC) partnered to find better solutions to target the nutritional problems of priority areas in the region.

During the 1st Joint Meeting of the Nutrition Action Officers’ Association of the Philippines (NAOPA), Inc. – MiMaRoPa Chapter, District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators’ Association of the Philippines (D/CNPCAP), Inc. – MiMaRoPa Chapter, and Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars in Region IV-B (FBNS IV-B) held last January 27, 2017 at St. Giles Hotel, Makati, Ms. Perla Supnet, Nutritionist-Dietitian IV of DOH MiMaRoPa presented the DOH Strategic Framework on Nutrition 2014-2025. This framework aims to achieve the vision of having empowered healthy and well-nourished Filipino families by the year 2025 through partnership and alignment of strategic actions and exertion of collective and unified efforts of the DOH with other agencies which plays valuable role in the improvement of nutrition.

8 November 2016 – The National Nutrition Council MIMAROPA held the annual Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony at The Heritage Hotel Manila to honor the nutrition champions in the region. The awardees were evaluated through the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) done earlier this year by the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET). Local Government Units (LGUs), Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAOs), and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) were given recognition for their active implementation of nutrition programs to help eradicate malnutrition in the region.
