To kick off the month long celebration of this year’s Nutrition Month, the National Nutrition Council Region 1 in coordination with the Department of Education- Regional Office 1 recently launched this year’s celebration with the theme, “Timbang iwasto sa tamang nutrisyon at ehersisyo,” at the Urdaneta 1 Central School (UICS).The activity was attended by around 300 participants composed of pupils, teachers, government officials, academe and media practitioners.
Urdaneta City was chosen as the venue for the launch as one of the pilot area on the accelerated and sustainable anti –poverty program (ASAPP) in the province of Pangasinan. It also ranked 4 with high prevalence of overweight school children among the nine other cities in the region.
Before the launching program, a press conference attended by media practitioners and information officers in the region was conducted at Matutinas Gerry’s Grill Seafoods. A simultaneous poster - slogan making contest and nutri-quiz were participated by pupils in support to the promotion of healthy lifestyle.
Meanwhile, Assistant Regional Director Edwin Sanchez of DOH-ROI and Nutrition Program Coordinator Ma. Eileen Blanco of NNC-ROI graced the launching of the nutrition month.
Nutrition Officer III Kendall A. Gatan of NNC ROI presented to the group the 2015 Nutrition Month objectives and statistical data on overnutrition. The disadvantages and consequences of obesity were discussed giving way to some recommendations on how to manage this malnutrition problem in the region.
Additional information on the 10 Kumainments campaign of NNC and DOH were presented by Nutrition Officer I Gretchen Nisperos who encouraged the pupils to know and able to recite the 10 Kumainments.
The program culminated with a signing of pledge of commitment by the participants led by UICS Principal Dr. Robert M. Tababa who expressed gratitude to NNC region 1 for the opportunity given them and their pupils. (MMFronda-North Luzon Headlines)
