Baguio City Nutrition Month Culminating Program and Awarding Ceremony

asec. flores with doc. factoran and atty. candilaoIn line with the celebration of the 38th Nutrition Month with the theme “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain”  the Baguio City Nutrition Committee   organized several activities like vegetable planting, various community-based contests such as the Biggest Fruit and Vegetable Contest, Pot Gardening Contest, Going to Market and Cook it up Yourself Contest and many more.

To formally end the celebration of Nutrition Month, the Baguio City Nutrition Committee  conducted the Nutrition Month Culminating Program and Awarding Ceremony on August 3, 2012 at the   Baguio General Hospital-Medical Center. It was attended by the several City Councilors, the chair and members of the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team, City Nutrition Evaluation Team, head and members of the City Nutrition Office of the Baguio Health Department, City Nutrition Action Officer, staff of the National Nutrition Council-CAR office, Liga ng Barangays and Barangay Nutrition Scholars from the different barangays of Baguio City.

The program started at around 9:00 in the morning  moderated by Dr. Elsie Fontanos and Mr. Albert Sumadchat.  The Doxology was led by members of the Barangay Irisan Nutrition Committee, Ms. Monica Sicat, 2011 regional outstanding BNS of CAR led the singing of Lupang Hinirangand Ms Joann Alvez, former regional outstanding BNS led the singing of  the Baguio Hymn. A moment of silence was offered to pay tribute to NNC NPC June Falancy who  passed away last July 29. The head of the Baguio General Hospital Medical Center Dr. Manuel V. Factora thanked everyone for choosing the BGH-MC as the venue of the activity.  He said in his welcome message that the BGH-MC supports the  objectives of the celebration in promoting good eating habits of the people in Baguio. Atty. Carlos Candilao, Baguio City Administrator gave an inspirational message in behalf of Hon. Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan. In his message he said that he had a self reflection before he delivered the inspirational message recognizing that  he was  not confident enough to deliver the message and inspire the audience because his knowledge on nutrition is limited.    He wished that he understood  the importance of nutrition more when he was much younger. He wished also that  people understood the importance of nutrition in their early lives so that they will have healthy adult lives. He ends his message by saying “health is wealth” that is, if we are healthy we will be wealthier. 

Assistant Secretary for Health Maria-Bernardita T. Flores was introduced by the chair of the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team, Ms Marcia Buminaang of DSWD-CAR. A/Sec Flores thanked the BCNC for inviting her to witness the activity. She said that she could not  say no to the invitation because it reached her as early as May. The keynote address of A/Sec Flores delivered in a 54-slide PowerPoint presentation was considerably long. But despite its length, the presentation was well received by the participants because some of them were taking down notes, almost all of them listened attentively, and there was minimal chatting during the presentation.

Assistant Secretary for Health Maria-Bernardita T. Flores together with Atty. Carlos Candilao, Dr. Manuel Factora and the City Councilors awarded the Best Implemented Barangay Nutrition Program, Oustanding Baranagay Nutrition Scholar and Best performing Barangay Nutrition Action Officer. They were assisted by Dr. Florence Reyes, City Health Officer and at the same time City Nutrition Action Officer. Other awardees include Ms. Monica Sicat as the Most Outstanding BNS for 2011, Barangay Irisan is the City’s Best Implemented Barangay Nutrition Program, and Ms. Joan Alvez is the Most Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Action Officer.

Dr. Florence Reyes, City Health Officer and also the City Nutrition Action Officer gave the closing remarks.  She thanked everyone for attending the NM Culminating Program and Awarding Ceremony despite  the bad weather. She hoped that the promotion of eating vegetable will continue and be translated into better nutritional status lower incidence of various non-communicable diseases of people not only in Baguio but of the entire Cordillera Administrative Region.
